Developmental Editing

What Is It?

Developmental editing focuses on developing your writing. This means looking at more global topics such as the content, flow, and clarity of the text as a whole.

What I'll Do:

I will identify inconsistencies, query factual errors, and look at the flow and clarity of the text, providing advice and recommendations. I will look at any potential significant structuring or restructuring of the text with the aim of improving the consistency and overall readability of your writing.

I will then provide you with one document with all of my comments and queries included for you to go through in your own time. If you have any follow-up questions or require further clarification, I will be happy to answer you for free for up to 2 weeks after you have received your work back.

Is It Right For Me?

Have you edited your work to the best of your ability? Are you sick of reading and re-reading and are unable to distance yourself from the words? Would you like a fresh pair of eyes to read through your work and provide professional feedback? If so, please contact me using the form below.

Please note - developmental editing doesn't include feedback regarding the fine details such as spelling and grammar, format, and setting. If you are looking to polish a work that's already been edited to a high level, see below.

Prices:

As each piece of writing is unique, one size does not fit all here. Please email me using the contact form stating the type of writing, the number of words, what kind of input you are looking for, and a sample of your writing (around 1,000 words). We can then talk about how I can best support you. This will be an informal talk with absolutely no obligation to commit there and then.

Copy Editing

What Is It?

Copy editing takes place after a substantive edit has been completed, but before proofreading. It looks at polishing your writing whilst retaining the author's voice and meaning. Basically, a copy editor corrects, and a proofreader revises and corrects.

What I'll Do:

I will double check everything in your work, ensuring it looks professional and is easy to understand. This includes eliminating spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors, checking for typesetting errors, ensuring that the work follows the 'house style', querying factual errors, ensuring illustrations and their labels correspond with one another, checking page numbers and headings/footers are consistent, and ensuring the correct fonts, font sizes and line spacing are used.

I will then provide you with two documents - one with the track changes and comments included, and one 'clean' copy with the suggested changes already completed. If you have any follow-up questions or require further clarification, I will be happy to answer you for free for up to 2 weeks after you have received your work back.

Is It Right For Me?

Do you have a finished document that you would like to be professionally checked for the above items before publishing it for everyone to see? If so, please contact me using the form below. Whether there's a spelling mistake, punctuation error, or inconsistent font formatting, it's my job to find it and make it as close to perfect as I can.

Please note - copy editing doesn't include feedback regarding the fluidity and cohesiveness of the work. If this is what you're looking for, see below. Or, if you are wanting a more global edit, looking at the bigger picture, see above.

Proofreading

What Is It?

Proofreading is one step further than copy editing. It focuses on all the things proofreading does but also ensures the accuracy, style and general quality of the work is up to scratch. This process often includes significant edits to the document where larger improvements are required. Basically, a copy editor corrects, and a proofreader revises and corrects.

What I'll Do:

As well as doing all of the things described in the copy editing service above, I will also provide feedback regarding the content, meaning, and writing style of the work. I will provide suggestions and comments regarding restructuring text, altering formatting, making stylistic changes, and improvements to develop the text's voice.

I will then provide you with two documents - one with the track changes and comments included, and one 'clean' copy with the suggested changes already completed. If you have any follow-up questions or require further clarification, I will be happy to answer you for free for up to 2 weeks after you have received your work back.

Is It Right For Me?

Would you like a more in-depth look at your work? Would you like feedback not only on what is factually incorrect, such as spelling and grammar errors, but also on the meaning of the words? Would you like to know if your work is being understood in the way that you mean for it to be? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, this is the service for you.

Submission Package

What Is It?

What I'll Do:

I will proofread the three documents, looking at any spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes, provide feedback and comments regarding any changes to improve the text's voice, and ensure the meaning of the work comes across as intended.

I will then provide you with two documents - 1 with the track changes and comments included, and 1 'clean' copy with the suggested changes already completed.
